Department of Paediatrics

Our Department has been functioning since the inception of this medical college from 2000 for the past 17 years.  Our student strength has increased from 100 to 150 students per year since 2013. Since its conception, our OUT Patient and IN Patient strength have increased enormously.  Our department is catering the needs of innumerable children and also have been giving good amount of training and teaching to the undergraduates, post graduates and CRRIs.

Our department has a well equipped 10 bedded Air-conditioned PICU. Around 8-10 acute and emergency pediatric cases are being admitted and effectively treated by our faculties every day.  Each bed in our PICU has been provided with ICU cots(Fowlers cot) , Central Oxygen, Compressed air, central Suction ,Pulse-Oximeter and Multi Channel monitor with 24 hours uninterrupted power supply (Generator & Inverter backup).  We have Ventilators for providing respiratory support to critically ill children.  In our PICU we are treating all kinds of emergencies like encephalitis, respiratory emergencies, diarrhea with severe dehydration ,Dengue hemorrhagic fever, status epilepticus, various types of shock, acute kidney injury, snake bite, poisoning etc

Cases of Upper GI bleed have been managed with endoscopic guidance of the medical gastroenterologist..  Respiratory tract foreign bodies have been removed bronchoscopically with the help of thoracic medicine dept..We are receiving a significant number of referral cases from peripheral Govt hospitals and PHCs around Thoothukudi.  All pandemic and epidemic  cases like Dengue, Swine flu , COVID -19, MIS-C have been treated successful.

FEVER Ward:

In view of the overwhelming number of fever cases , a seperate ward for fever evaluation has been instated and running smoothly.

HEMODIALYSIS / PERITONEAL DIALYSIS :

Nephrology unit is functioning separately under Nephrologist which caters to the needs of children suffering from Kidney diseases like nephrotic syndrome, acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease. SSRT Diaysis machine is available in our PICU. Hemodialysis and Peritoneal dialysis are being done to all the children with renal failure.  Difficult and rare cases are being efficiently diagnosed and treated with renal biopsy and advanced medications. OPD is being conducted twice a week to followup all Nephrology cases.

NICU

We have separate NICU (fully air conditioned) which is well equipped with adequate warmers, incubators, phototherapy units, CPAP units and Ventilators. We have separate rooms for intramural and extramural cases. A separate ward for neonatal sepsis is functioning. In cases of severe jaundice exchange transfusion procedure is done.

A well spaced room for breast feeding and KMC care is present. All the cases admitted in NICU are being followed up in well baby clinic OP regularly and evaluated for ROP screening hearing assessment. We approximately have 250 to 300 intramural admissions per month. We are also receiving a significant number of referral cases from peripheral Govt hospitals and PHCs around Thoothukudi. Many sick newborn cases like HMD, MAS, birth asphyxia, sepsis etc. have been managed successfully.

Breast Milk Bank

In an effort to provide mother’s milk to all newborns a breast milk bank was initiated in our government Thoothukudi medical college. The bank can store breast milk and donated by lactating mothers. With the available equipment the milk can be pasteurized and kept for deep freezing and will be provided 24*7 to all needed babies.
